The purpose of the Friends of the Market remains essentially the same as first adopted during the 1964-1971 grassroots campaign to “Keep the Market”:

  • Assist with the preservation, maintenance and stewardship of the Market Historical District and surrounding neighborhood.
  • Educate the public to promote understanding and appreciation of Market history and cultural traditions.
  • Support and promote activities to ensure Pike Place Market’s historic and traditional use as a farmers’ market.

Friends of the Market, a Washington State non-profit corporation and a IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organization, holds two of the mayoral appointments on the Pike Place Market Historical Commission and complies with the provisions of Seattle Municipal Code Chapter 25.24 according to Ordinance No. 100475, as amended and based on Initiative Petition No. 270105.
